A escasos kilómetros del centro de la capital, hay un cantón que llevo en mi corazón, es Curridabat. Ahí, tengo las primeras memorias de mi corazón, algunas como borrosas imágenes que tibiamente se asoman y, otras, se despliegan con una exquisita lucidez.
Aquellas memorias que se asoman como bruma en la noche, traen imágenes de una plaza de fútbol en donde hoy está el parque de Curridabat, también las butacas del cine Salas en donde hoy está un supermercado. Otras memorias se van aclarando un poco más, al recordar los turnos en honor a San Antonio, los cuales se hacían en frente de la fachada del templo católico. Aquí, las memorias se van haciendo más reales.
Los payasos, los algodones de azúcar, las manzanas escarchadas y la algarabía nocturna, tienen un lugar especial en mi corazón, pues siendo un niño bastante enfermizo por mi bronquitis, recuerdo muy bien que mis tíos me llevaban al turno, más envuelto que los mismos tamales que se vendían ahí. Amaba visitar la casa de mi tía Betsy y su esposo el licenciado Francisco Mata Amador, la casa de la vecina de abuela, doña Miriam, también la casa de mi madrina Martha Eugenia Aguilar Wallen, la casa de la costurera de mi madre, doña Gladys. Casas, todas en el centro de Curridabat.
