• UN GLACIAR es una gran masa de hielo, formado por un proceso milenario y su tamaño dependerá de la cantidad de hielo que logre retener a lo largo de su vida; por el amontonamiento de nieve, de la nieve que cae, la que transporta el viento, las avalanchas, agua que se congela que se compacta y se cristaliza.
La Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas declaró el 2025 Año Internacional de la Conservación de los Glaciares para crear conciencia sobre la función vital que desempeñan los glaciares, la nieve y el hielo en el sistema climático y el ciclo del agua, así como los impactos de gran alcance del deshielo acelerado de los glaciares.
Por la situación geografíca de nuestro pais y al no tener glaciares cerca podríamos pensar que es un tema que no nos compete, pero somos parte de un planeta que sufre las consecuencias del irresponsable comportamiento en nuestro entorno.
Estas grandes masas de hielo están en movimiento y se originan al compactarse y recristalizarse la nieve acumulada en lugares fríos. Hay varios tipos de glaciares, como los que se forman en las altas montañas y fluyen por los valles, otras masas que cubren extensas áreas en las regiones polares.
En total, los glaciares cubren el 10 % de la superficie terrestre y, junto a las capas de hielo, suman casi el 70 % del agua dulce del planeta.
Hay glaciares en todos los continentes, excepto Australia.
¿Cuál es la importancia de los glaciares?
• Los glaciares son la mayor reserva de agua dulce del planeta. Alrededor del 70 % del agua dulce mundial se almacena en glaciares y capas de hielo.
• Liberan gradualmente agua que alimenta ríos y lagos. Los glaciares cumplen un papel muy importante en el ciclo o fases del agua debido al deshielo.
• Son esenciales para la sostenibilidad ambiental, la estabilidad económica y la salvaguardia de culturas y medios de vida.

El aumento de la temperatura por la rapidez con la que avanza el cambio climático, podría extinguir a los glaciares en un tiempo récord.
La Organización Mundial de Meteorología -OMM – confirmó recientemente que el 2024 fue el año más cálido registrado y ha emitido repetidas alertas rojas sobre el estado del clima y el retroceso de los glaciares.
En 2023, los glaciares sufrieron la mayor pérdida de masa en los últimos 50 años de los que se tienen registros.Fue el segundo año consecutivo en que todas las regiones del mundo con glaciares reportaron pérdidas de hielo.
El derretimiento del hielo y de los glaciares pone en peligro la seguridad hídrica a largo plazo para muchos millones de personas.

Consecuencias del derretimiento de los glaciares
Aumento del nivel del mar: El derretimiento de los glaciares ha contribuido a la crecida de los océanos en 2,7 centímetros desde 1961. Además, los glaciares del mundo tienen hielo suficiente –unos 170.000 kilómetros cúbicos– como para aumentar el nivel del maren casi medio metro.
Impacto sobre el clima: El deshielo glaciar en los polos está frenando las corrientes oceánicas, esto es un fenómeno de la alteración del clima mundial. Ya somos testigos de episodios meteorológicos cada vez más extremos en todo nuestro planeta.
Desaparición de especies: El derretimiento de los glaciares provocará también la extincion de numerosas especies ya que es el hábitat natural de numerosos animales terrestres y acuáticos.
