Septiembre siempre tuvo un olor especial en Curridabat. Era como si el aire se llenara de emoción, mezclando el aroma del papel crepé, la escarcha y las banderas recién estrenadas. Desde el primer día del mes, las aulas se transformaban: había que decorar las paredes con cintas tricolores, recortar siluetas de Juan Santamaría y pegar mapas de Centroamérica en las carteleras.
La víspera del 14 de septiembre era un ritual. En las casas se trabajaba en familia para fabricar el farol, que muchas veces era de lata de leche en polvo, papel celofán y palitos de madera. Los padres ayudaban a perforar la lata y a colocar la vela; los niños hacíamos dibujos de la bandera o del escudo. Y al llegar la tarde, todo el pueblo se llenaba de luces de colores.
A las 6 en punto, el Himno Nacional se cantaba con el corazón en la mano. Se sentía la piel de gallina al escuchar a toda la comunidad cantando al unísono. No existía distracción alguna: ni teléfonos, ni cámaras, ni audífonos. Solo familias unidas, faroles encendidos y un profundo respeto por lo que significaba la independencia.
El Gran Día: 15 de septiembre
El 15 de septiembre amanecía con tambores. Desde temprano se escuchaban los redobles de la banda de la escuela. Las mamás planchaban el uniforme, lustraban los zapatos y colocaban la escarapela con orgullo en el pecho.
Asistir al desfile era un honor. Algunos marchaban en la banda, otros cargaban la bandera, yo con el grupo de bailes y todos los demás caminaban en fila, serios y orgullosos. Las calles de Curridabat se llenaban de gente: vecinos con sillas en la acera, niños con banderitas en la mano, abuelitas aplaudiendo cada paso de los estudiantes.
Los actos cívicos eran solemnes: se recitaban poemas, se dramatizaba la firma de la independencia y se escuchaban discursos que nos recordaban que éramos parte de algo más grande: un país libre y en paz. Cuando mencionaban el nombre de un estudiante para colocarle la banderita de honor en la camisa, el corazón latía más fuerte. Llegar a casa y decir: “¡Mamá, izamos bandera!” era uno de los logros más grandes que se podía tener.
Una época que extrañamos
En aquellos tiempos, el respeto por el maestro era incuestionable. El colegio era una segunda casa. Ni la lluvia impedía asistir: regresar empapado era hasta divertido. Los recreos eran sanos: saltar la cuerda, jugar bolinchas, el trompo, el quemado… Los problemas se resolvían a la salida, y las amistades se fortalecían en la cancha de cemento.
Eran tiempos en que izar la bandera o llevar el cuaderno de asistencia de la niña era un honor. Cuando un acto patrio no era excusa para quedarse en casa, sino motivo de orgullo y celebración.
Hoy, al mirar atrás, uno se pregunta cuándo dejamos de vivir las Fiestas Patrias con el corazón, cuándo se perdió la emoción de esperar la antorcha o de escuchar el redoble de tambores en las calles.
Si esto que llamamos “progreso” significa que la historia, el respeto y el amor por la patria pasen a segundo plano, entonces quizá sea hora de volver a mirar atrás y rescatar lo que realmente nos hacía sentir orgullosos.
Porque aquellos días en Curridabat no eran solo celebración: eran lecciones de vida, de comunidad y de identidad.
