En 1982, abrir los portones de mi cochera para vivir una experiencia extraordinaria: las primeras elecciones infantiles en Curridabat.

Tuve la dicha de ver la alegría de los niños y niñas del barrio y de otros lugares vecinos después de emitir su voto y enseñar su dedo pulgar manchado con tinta indeleble.

En 1986 repetí la experiencia en el parque de Curridabat y el número de votantes aumentó. Tuve el aprecio de algunos medios de comunicación nacionales que dieron cobertura a aquella fiesta cívico-electoral. Incluso, de la televisión alemana.

En 1990, en el 94,98, 2002 y sucesivamente cada cuatro años los pequeños tuvieron esa oportunidad de votar el día sábado, víspera de las votaciones que realizan sus padres.

En ninguna de esas votaciones hubo reclamo por irregularidades y en cada una se confirmó la credibilidad y fidelidad, en el sentido de que nunca se dijo el resultado para que los partidos contendores sacaran provecho del escrutinio.

Hecha esta referencia histórica, puedo decir con orgullo que buena parte de la niñez curridabatense aprendió a votar y descubrió la importancia de utilizar un instrumento que brinda la libertad de decidir cuáles ciudadanos se encargarán de dirigir los destinos de nuestro país durante cuatro años de administración.

Esos pequeños votantes hoy son ciudadanos con edades oscilantes entre los 27 y 39 años Puedo pensar que todos ellos tienen ese lindo recuerdo de aquella primera votación, con esa iniciativa que comenzó en 1982.

Pero tengo un enorme pesar que opaca esa satisfacción adquirida porque sospecho que muchos de ellos pertenecen a esa legión de abstencionistas que no votarn el próximo primero de febrero del 2026.

No votar es pisotear el sacrificio que hicieron nuestros padres y abuelos para conquistar el derecho sagrado del voto.

Sé que hay un desencanto político. Sé que existe un enojo por las promesas incumplidas por los gobernantes. Que hay corrupción y que el costo de la vida es insoportable. Se suman la falta de credibilidad y falta de verdadero liderazgo. Todo esto y más no los motiva a votar.

A Costa Rica se le debe dar un mejor rumbo y necesita emergentemente la participación ciudadana.

Si usted forma parte de esa legión de abstencionistas, le insto a que cambie de actitud y que piense y recuerde aquella primera votación que le alegró el espíritu. Vote y cumpla con un derecho que muchos países no tienen.

Vote, ejerza ese derecho y ese deber con la Patria. Hágalo por usted mismo, por su familia y construya democracia. Si ya tuvo su primera experiencia en las elecciones infantiles, ahora reviva ese instante y  sienta esa misma emoción. Lo que bien se aprende no se olvida.
